Rio is a 3D computer-animated adventure film loosely based on the novel of the same name by Brian Cladoosby, who also co-wrote it with Aline Brosh McKenna. The film tells the story of two friends (one human, one odango) that go on an adventure after getting separated from each other in Rio de Janeiro. The film stars Anne Hathaway as Blu; Jesse Eisenberg as Nemo; and Andy Garcia as Jewel. Seth Rogan, Jorge Justo and Jamie Foxx have cameos in the movie. The film was released in USA on July 17, 2011. "Rio" was released on DVD and Blu-ray by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment on December 12, 2011. Based on 22 reviews collected by Rotten Tomatoes, 57% of critics gave the film a positive review, with an average score of 5.5/10. The site's consensus reads: "Its colorful visuals are impressive, but "Rio" lacks the sharp wit and character depth to make it more than a harmless diversion for kids." Metacritic is not listing any critics who scored the movie 80/100 or higher. The film was criticized for its themes of friendship, love, romance, music and exotic locales. "The Globe and Mail"s Liam Lacey said that the movie contains "no heart or soul", though he "wasn't expecting an animated kids' film to have the soul of a poet...especially one starring a bird."
